US Violent Crime and Murder Rates Fall in 2017 New FBI data says violent crime and murder rates have fallen for the first time since 2014. The murder rate fell from 5.4 per 100,000 people in 2016 to 5.3 per 100,000 in 2017. Before, the rate had spiked by more than 22 percent in 2015 and 2016. Violent crime, meanwhile, fell from 386.6 per 100,000 people in 2016 to 382.9
