South Carolina Prepares to Build Flood Barrier in Georgetown

The South Carolina National Guard brought in water-filled cofferdams to help keep rising floodwaters from US-17 in Georgetown on September 23. Upstream, water from the Waccamaw River is already flooding Conway and is headed down to Georgetown.Transportation Department officials met with city emergency officials on Sunday to work out the plan for the barrier along the highway. Earlier, the National Guard constructed a floating ribbon bridge in case US-17 becomes impassable.Emergency officials said the Pee Dee and Waccamaw Rivers could bring as much as 10 feet of water in areas close to the rivers.
