Liberty Korea Party floor leader says government's policies driving economy to crisis

The National Assembly's 100-day regular session started this week... and the leaders of South Korea's three main parties are taking turns addressing lawmakers.
And today,.... it's the Liberty Korea Party's turn.
For more details, we have our political correspondent Kim Min-ji on the line for us.
Minji,.. tell us more

Kim Sung-tae -- the floor leader of the main opposition Liberty Korea Party -- used most of his time to criticize the government's policies -- claiming they are driving the economy to the brink of crisis.
He said the government's minimum wage hike and drive for shorter working hours have slammed low-income households,... young job seekers,... and small business owners -- rather than boosting their income and spurring consumption.
He also pointed out that all of the government's policies come with a heavy price tag for taxpayers.
Kim called on the government to admit its policy has failed,... and demanded that it shift its economic policy direction.
The floor leader said his party will be at the forefront of ways to turn things around.
He said what the government should be doing is allocating a higher budget to solve the country's chronically low birth rate by providing incentives and more financial support for child rearing.

On North Korea, the floor leader said the ratification of the inter-Korean summit declaration reached in April is not timely -- as it's too early to determine whether Pyongyang is fully committed to denuclearization.
And with a third inter-Korean summit between Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong-un slated to take place sometime in September,... Kim Sung-tae said the purpose of the talks is North Korea's denuclearization.
He stressed that ridding North Korea of its nuclear arsenal though international coordination is more urgent than declaring an end to the Korean War.
Back to you, Ji-yoon.
