The university grants commission has directed all varsities and higher education institutions to ban the sale of junk food on their campuses. In the web circular, UGC reminded the institutes of its advisory issued in November 2016 to create awareness among youth who are vulnerable to being lured to fast food. In 2016, UGC made it mandatory for canteens running at institutions of higher learning to have licences under the food safety and standards authority of India. The circular also advises that wellness clusters be created under the students’ welfare department, to offer counselling on proper nutrition, exercise and healthy habits.
