트럼프의 '직설', 미중 무역협상 영향은 - 신상협 교수 대담

To help us better understand everything that is going on at the moment, we have with us Professor Shin Sang-hyup from Kyunghee University. Thank you for coming today Professor.

My pleasure.

1 - Trade talks between the U.S. and China are set to take place soon. But as that report says, there is not much hope at the moment of a significant breakthrough. Do you see it the same way?

2 - Trump himself, in an interview on Monday, said that he does not anticipate anything to come out of these rounds of talks. If the President says that, then are the talks doomed to fail from the start? Do you think Trump will have ordered them not to make progress?

2a - Trump has also accused Chinese companies of flooding the U.S. with the synthetic heroin drug fentanyl, describing it as a, quote, 'form of warfare'. Do you think this issue will be tied into the talks as well?

3 - There are commentaries that say this China bashing is part of the Trump administration's plan to try and win republican votes for the U.S. mid-term elections in November, rather than trying to tackle any greater U.S. trade issues. Would you agree with this assessment?

4 - Trump famously exclaimed that trade wars are easy to win. Who would you say is winning right now?

5 - South Korea's main Kospi index has seen a jump since Monday, and it's said to be on the back of Trump's comments on China and his criticisms of the U.S. Fed's recent rate hikes. There were concerns about how the U.S.-China trade dispute would affect Korea and the rest of Asia, but so far the effects seem minimal. Were those concerns exaggerated or is it just too early to feel the effects yet?

6 - The U.S. is also in dispute with Turkey for various economic and political reasons, and it has had a very strong impact there. The value of the Turkey's currency, the lira, has fallen 40% since the beginning of the year. Have you seen anything like this before?
