[ISSUE TALK] Trump raises prospect of second summit with Kim Jong-un but avoids details

트럼프 대통령, 북미 2차 정상회담 언급 - 우정엽 박사 대담

Joining us in the studio to talk through the latest developments, we have with us Dr. Woo Jung-yeop,... from the Sejong Institute. Thank you for joining us today.

My pleasure.

1 - As we just saw, in an interview with Reuters, when President Trump was asked whether a second summit with Kim Jong-un would happen, he said that it was, quote, "most likely". But he also didn't reveal much else, refusing to give a time or location. What can we read from this?

2 - When he was also asked about whether he thinks North Korea have taken specific steps towards denuclearization, he also answered, quote, "I do believe they have." But again, he did not elaborate. There has been some reports that a nuclear missile site is being dismantled, and a missile engine test site has also shown signs of shutting down, but there has been no real sign of denuclearization, at least none that has been reported. Does Trump or U.S. intelligence know something we don't?

3 - Pompeo has been rumoured to make his fourth visit to Pyongyang soon, but there has still been no confirmation. We always thought the agenda would be about the denuclearization process, but do you think it could now be about a second Kim-Trump summit?

4 - Trump also that a lot of "good things" are happening with North Korea, but he complained that China was not helping as much as it had in the past, because of the trade dispute with the U.S. It was reported over the weekend that Xi Jinping could be going to Pyongyang soon for the 70th anniversary of the regime foundation. Do you think Xi will feel any pressure from Trump's comments?

5 - A Russian official is reported to told a Russian newspaper that despite invitations from Moscow, President Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong-un would not be attending the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok in September, because of the inter-Korean summit which was recently announced. The forum was set for September 11th to 13th. Can we expect the summit to take place around then?

5a - Despite the invitations, I guess it is not a surprise that the leaders decided to snub Moscow's invitation to the forum?

6 - The separated family reunions have been taking place since Monday. So far there has been no response on North Korean state media, but how do you think they will respond? What do North Korea want to try and get out of it?
