Prime Minister Dumps Paris Emission Targets Amid Leadership Tensions
  • 6 years ago
The Australian Prime Minister announced on August 20 that his government would be dumping the emissions target from his Paris Agreement energy policy, citing a lack of support from his own party and amidst a struggle to retain leadership.Malcolm Turnbull announced he would be abandoning the 26 per cent cut to greenhouse gas emissions stipulated in the National Energy Guarantee – a policy cut, as Fairfax reported, that would result in zero climate change targets. The energy policy has polarised the Coalition, and Turnbull, alongside the Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison and Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg, was grilled by reporters on Monday about the impending threats of a leadership spill led by Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton. In the past week, Dutton has been shoring up support in his home state of Queensland, with the state’s Liberal National president Gary Spence privately urging Federal politicians to support the Home Affairs minister in toppling Turnbull, The Australian reported. When questioned about the prospects of an uprising, Turnbull said: “I enjoy the confidence of the cabinet and my party room.”He added about Dutton: “Peter Dutton was at our leadership team meeting this morning. He is a member of our team, he has given me his absolute support.”If the Home Affairs minister were to initiate a cabinet spill to take the top job from Turnbull, it would be the fourth time an Australian Prime Minister had been successfully deposed by their own party in eight years.
