Seoul's finance ministry seeks to provide greater support to sectors that need to become globally competitive.
Ultimately the goal is promoting Korean industries considered crucial to the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Kim Ji-yeon sheds light on this strategic investment plan.
The Minister of Economy and Finance Kim Dong-yeon held a meeting in Seoul on Monday with economy-related ministers and announced measures to revitalize the so-called "platform economy" to help spur innovative growth.
To make the platform economy a reality, the government is to invest more than 370-point-4-million U.S. dollars next year in fields related to the 'data economy', artificial intelligence and the 'hydrogen economy'.
The government is to spend nearly 79-point-4-million dollars of next year's budget on fostering 10-thousand local experts over the next five years.

"The government aims to spend more than 4-point-4-billion U.S. dollars of next year's budget on the platform economy and eight core innovative fields. That's nearly one-point-eight-billion dollars more compared to this year's."

It also says it's setting up a startup school, tentatively named "Innovation Academy" to help form a network with globally renowned education institutes and companies.
Among the existing eight core innovative fields the government had plans to make strategic investments in, the ministry says it has replaced smart superconnectivity with biohealth... with the former categorized under the data economy category.
It vowed to provide research and development in the biotech sector for the development of personalized treatment, also known as 'precision' medicine.
It plans to conduct cohort projects to collect and utilize bio and medical data and build a data platform so that hospitals can share the data.
The government also selected the cities of Sejong and Busan as demonstration sites for the development of smart cities.
The ministry says it'll support the building of infrastructure in the development of autonomous vehicles and provide guidelines for drone testing sites.
