The independent probe team looking into illegal political interference by a recently dissolved military intel unit, asked the nation's defense minister for an extension to its investigation period.
The team is looking into confidential documents that were drawn up by the Defense Security Command, allegedly related to plans to impose martial law in case protests turned violent following a court ruling on Park Geun-hye's impeachment.
As the 40-day period ends on the 20th of this month,... a military official said the defense chief is likely to accept the requested extension.
The investigation can be extended by a month, up to three times.
The probe team also plans to add about 10 more investigators to the current 30-member squad,... due to the excessive workload.
The result of the investigation should be ready by mid-September at the earliest.
