Independent probe team summons working-level officials from military intel unit Wednesday

An independent investigation into the military's alleged contingency plan for declaring martial law... during the candlelight demonstrations that ultimately led to the impeachment of former president Park Geun-hye.
On Wednesday, some working-level officials from that intel unit were summoned for questioning.
Park Ji-won reports.
The independent probe team has summoned three officials from the embattled Defense Security Command for questioning -- the first officials summoned by the team since the probe began on Monday.
Arirang News has confirmed with a military source that they were summoned and questioned on Wednesday.
The Defense Security Command is the South Korean military's intelligence unit.
The three officials are alleged to have helped draw up the document in question -- a contingency plan for declaring martial law... during the candlelight demonstrations that ultimately led to the impeachment of former president Park Geun-hye.
So investigators are expected to focus on how they got involved in and what exactly they were ordered to write.
The document was reportedly written by about 15 people in a period of two weeks early last year.
It was reported to then-defense minister Han Min-goo by then-Defense Security Commander Cho Hyun-chon.
The independent team consists of about 30 people, including 15 military prosecutors,... and they have until August 10th,... but their mandate can be extended if necessary.
South Korea's defense ministry is also collecting all documents related to the martial law plan... on the orders of President Moon Jae-in who told the ministry on Monday to submit them as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, a committee at the defense ministry is discussing a range of reform measures to overhaul the Defense Security Command.
One such measure is reportedly... to no longer allow the military intel unit commander to give regular oral reports to the President, which had allowed him or her to bypass the defense minister.
A ministry official said... those reforms are still under discussion and cannot be confirmed.
