S. Korean gov't seeks to ban use of plastic bags at supermarkets
  • 6 years ago
By the end of this year, it's likely that supermarkets and bakeries in Korea will be banned from giving their customers one-time-use plastic bags.
The environment ministry will be submitting a proposal to that effect in the next few days.
It's already against the law to give out plastic bags of any kind for free, but this will ban them for one-time use entirely.
Shoppers will still have the option of paying for a bag that can be re-used at home for throwing out trash.
Otherwise, they can pack their groceries in the store's empty cardboard boxes or take a paper bag.
The Moon administration has stepped up its campaign against plastic waste since China stopped importing other countries' plastic to be recycled.
