North Korea's declaration of all nuclear weapons, facilities, missiles deemed first step of denuclearization: NYT
  • 6 years ago
With U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo preparing to leave for Pyongyang in the coming days,... there are reports he'll show the regime the denuclearization timetable the U.S. has in mind.
The process will start with the North telling Washington the number, location and type of all of its nuclear weapons, missiles and production facilities.
Kim Hyo-sun has more.
The New York Times reports that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's third visit to North Korea this week will be focused on presenting a denuclearization timeline to the regime.
It says the process would begin with the North's declaration of all of its weapons, missiles as well as production facilities,... with the paper adding that this would be the first real test of the regime's commitment towards abandoning its nuclear weapons.
The report also stated that U.S. intelligence officials are eyeing whether the North includes a covert plant that's suspected of producing enriched uranium.
Citing the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security,... the New York Times said the secretive facility known as Kangsong,... has probably produced a significant amount of weapons-grade uranium,... based on the fact that the plant has thousands of centrifuges that have been operating for years.
Meanwhile,... diplomatic sources in Seoul say U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim delivered a message from President Trump to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un via senior North Korean official Kim Yong-chol during a meeting at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom on Sunday.
While it's unclear what the message entails,... Yonhap News Agency reports that it may be about the early return of the remains of American troops who died during the Korean War as well as implementing measures for the regime's complete denuclearization,... which is what the two leaders committed to during their summit in Singapore on June 12th.
