Austrians Rally in Protest Against Proposal to Allow 12-Hour Work Day

Tens of thousands gathered in the Austrian capital Vienna on Saturday, June 30, to protest government proposals to allow the work day to be extended to 12 hours.The proposal, set to go before parliament on July 5, has proved controversial and Austria’s right-wing governemnt has already ammeded the proposal to allow workers to refuse to work beyond 10 hours, DW reported.The existing work day is eight hours long, or a 40 hours per week, with allowences for extension subject to certain restrictions, according to the EU employment agency Eurofound.Some 80,000 people gathered for the protests, DW reported, citing police accounts, but labour unions reported up to 100,000 people took part.This video shows a timelapse of the march.
