S. Korea's immigration authorities begin screening process for nearly 500 Yemeni refugees on Jeju Island

South Korea's immigration authorities have started screening the applications of hundreds of Yemeni nationals that are seeking refuge on South Korea's southern resort island of Jeju.
The Ministry of Justice says it will lift the travel ban issued on them following the first round of the screening process.
Kim Hyo-sun tells us more.
South Korea's immigration authority on Monday began reviewing the applications of Yemeni refugees seeking asylum on Jeju Island.
The Korea Immigration Service's Jeju branch said new staff members including two Arabic interpreters joined the team to review the personal information of nearly 500 Yemenis.

"We plan to first carry out the screening process for those who have humanitarian reasons for coming, those who are unemployed and those who urgently need to leave the island."

Following the primary screening process,... the Ministry of Justice plans to lift the ban it has issued on the Yemenis,... which prohibits them from traveling elsewhere in the nation.
The ministry also explained that a support center for foreigners should be established in Jeju once their stay on the island is prolonged.
If the number of Yemeni refugees seeking asylum on Jeju increases,... it looks likely that a special facility would be built to support their stay,... similar to the foreigner support center which is already in Yeongjongdo, Incheon.
It's left to be seen whether Korea can become a second home to the Yemenis who fled their home country due to civil war and hunger.
