This is a monument of the Discoveries on the northern bank of the Tagus River estuary. It is located at Santa Maria de Belém, Lisbon where ships departed to explore and trade with India and Orient. The monument celebrates the Portuguese Age of Discovery during the 15th and 16th centuries. Vasco da Gama 1460 - 1524 is the Portuguese explorer and the first European to reach India by sea.
