North Korea-China look to re-strengthen ties as Kim returns home after Beijing visit

북미 간 후속 협상 진척은? - 김한권 교수 대담

To further discuss the significance of Kim Jong-un's visit to Beijing, we have with us Professor Kim Han-kwon from the Korea National Diplomatic Academy. Professor Kim, welcome to the show.

Thank you for having me.

1 - Kim Jong-un is now back in Pyongyang after his trip to Beijing. During that trip he visited the Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Beijing Rail Traffic Control Center among other places. Is he already laying the groundwork for future economic cooperation with Beijing? (Is it perhaps too early, considering sanctions are still in place)

2 - Is it inevitable that the relationship between North Korea and China will become closer, now that tensions in the region are subsiding?

3 - Kim Jong-un has been to China three times now. Do you think Xi Jinping will make a reciprocal visit to Pyongyang any time soon? And what would it mean if he did? Would it matter if he didn't?

4 - Trump has met with Xi Jinping three times now, but on the other hand he has also met with President Trump. He is building relations with both, but do you think it will be difficult for him to balance those relationships?

5 - So far, North Korea seems to be making moves on at least one of the agreements made in the June 12 declaration, the repatriation of the remains of American MIA soldiers from the Korean War. It's expected to happen within the next few days. How significant a step is this by Pyongyang?

6 - North Korea has previously asked for cash to return the remains of American soldiers in the past. That has been a contentious issue in the past, but you don't think they will ask this time, do you?

7 - Last week Washington hinted that further talks with North Korea to implement the June 12 declaration would take place this week, but it seems they won't be happening after all. Why do you think that is? (Are there concerns that talks are already hitting problems?)
