President Trump on Monday asserted that special counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading the Russia probe, and former FBI Director James Comey are best friends. "Comey gave Strozk [sic] his marching orders. Mueller is Comey's best friend. Witch Hunt!" Trump wrote in a tweet. One day prior, he tweeted, "'The highest level of bias I've ever witnessed in any law enforcement officer.' Trey Gowdy on the FBI's own, Peter Strzok." "Also remember that they all worked for Slippery James Comey and that Comey is best friends with Robert Mueller. A really sick deal, isn't it?" the president also said. The suggestion that Mueller and Comey share a close personal relationship is one that has been circulating since Comey's firing in 2017 and Mueller's subsequent appointment.  A number of people familiar with the interactions between the two have described their dealings as friendly, but in a strictly professional way.  As for Strzok, Fox News recently reported that the Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz "cited numerous exchanges between Strzok and [Lisa] Page, who were in a romantic relationship, but ultimately concluded that there was no evidence that anti-Trump bias played a role in the FBI's investigation of Hillary Clinton's private email server."  The media outlet notes that Strzok did work on the Mueller probe for a brief time, but was removed when the special counsel became aware of the messages he shared with Page. The recent inspector general report, which also concludes that Strzok's political views did not sway the early stages of Russia investigation, has prompted a number of GOP lawmakers to again accuse the Mueller investigation of being biased and to call for its end.
