Bio-Hackers Have DIY Approach to Designing the Future of Body Armor
  • 6 years ago
These bio-hackers are taking a DIY approach to designing body armor. This is a brand new type of body armor invented and fabricated at the New Flesh Workshop (NFW) in Conifer, Colorado. They invented and are testing three new body armor prototypes: A crush-resistant suit, a heat, crush and impact-resistant suit, and a blast and impact-resistant suit. The goal is to develop this technology for protecting first responders, people doing extreme research, and people dealing with post-disaster cleanup in dangerous areas. They’re basically making Superman suits so that people aka superheroes can operate and function in environments that humans have never been able to before. NFW takes a hybrid approach, combining the precision and repeatability of digital tech with the customization and beauty of traditional handmade prosthetics. In the past, NFW has created a DIY artificial ear and a bulletproof prosthetic leg. They’ve gone through 12 armor prototypes in the past 2.5 years. The company started, unofficially, in 2007 in founder Seth ‘Dr. Adventure’ Kane’s mom’s garage.
