Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Baker in Gay Wedding Cake Case On Monday, Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 in its decision that baker Jack Phillips was justified in declining to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple. Justice Anthony Kennedy signed the ruling and wrote: “The Civil Rights Commission’s treatment of his case has some elements of a clear and impermissible hostility toward the sincere religious beliefs that motivated his objection.” In 2012, Phillips rejected the request of David Mullins and his partner Charlie Craig, arguing that the service went against his Christian faith. The couple filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, who cited a state anti-discrimination law when ruling in the couple’s favor. Phillips consulted the Colorado Court of Appeals, arguing that the couple’s request was in violation of his constitutional right to exercise his religious beliefs freely.
