WWII factory friends still reunite every 10th VE Day
  • 5 years ago
Joyce King, 90, Iris Pryce, 91, and Alma Abbot, 85, are the three remaining workers from a group of 12 who made an agreement on the back of scrap paper 70 years ago. The trio all worked at the James Booth Laboratory in Nechells, Birmingham testing metals for Spitfire planes, which went on to battle the Luftwaffe. When the Nazis were defeated, the group vowed to meet up every decade for a reunion on the steps of the Hall of Memory based in the city's Centenary Square. And today (Fri) the wartime pals will honour their pact for a seventh time when they meet to commemorate the 70th anniversary of VE Day. The group first met back up in 1955 and during their last reunion in 2005 the former workers returned to their old factory for a tour. This year the pensioners will gather at the war memorial in Birmingham city centre to pay their respects before going back to Mrs King's house to enjoy afternoon tea.
