More than 50 Taliban Leaders Said Killed in US Rocket Strike in Afghanistan

A May 24 rocket attack on a Taliban building in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province killed more than 50 of the group’s senior commanders attending a meeting, a Pentagon spokesman said on Wednesday, May 30, calling the attack “a notable strike.”This video shows what the US Department of Defense described as an “M142 HIMARS strike,” referring to the US Army’s high mobility artillery rocket system, a missile launcher mounted on the back of a truck that can be transported by cargo aircraft.The operation took place as the Taliban fights its annual spring offensive, which included an attack by gunmen on the Interior Ministry in Kabul, and serious incidents in Takhar province, Loghar, and Kandahar, Reuters reported.Commanders from across Afghanistan were said to have taken part in the May 24 meeting in the Musa Qala district of Helmand, including some from Farah, where Taliban fighters this month briefly threatened to overrun the provincial capital, Reuters reported.
