Elephant eats woman's handbag after couple stops for a selfie

These holidaymakers had stopped in an Indian national park to take photos with the animal, but he had other plans in mind - he reached into their car to pick a trinket!

Tourists who stopped to take photos of an elephant got more than they bargained for when the beast swiped their handbag.

The hungry animal made the theft when she reached into a couple’s car and and helped herself to the contents.

The thief struck in the Bandipur National Park, south-west India, after two tourists stopped for some selfies with her.

But the protective animal was with her calf and chased the tourists off.

She then stuck her trunk through the open windows of their car, grabbed the handbag and ate it - along with the fruit, bank cards and gold jewellery inside.

Experts at the park said they will now observe the domesticated elephant - who had chains on her front legs - amid fears the handbag could cause internal bleeding.
