Kode wala lashes himself for money - Can hurting yourself earn money?

  • 6 years ago
Self flagellation by a Hindu at the Himalayan Kullu Dussehra fair. A father looks to buy a used jacket from a used clothes stall, along with his wife, for his son.

Also, don't miss the elaborate wooden carved chariot! Is this dance called a Kode wala dance and is it not just to beg for alms but a valid and proper dance form in itself?

Man beating himself for money. Is it fun to watch a man who is beating himself for money? What kind of fun or entertainment is in this act?

Viewer Shriya Gupta has this to add in terms of her observations about this clip: "Bad luck of this dance is that 99% of all kode wala performers can't perform this dance perfectly. In this dance make up, dress up, footwork, body language, face expressions, music all is very important.

During my childhood, there was a kode wala who used to come to our colony every year around diwali. His hair was long curly dark black, body was black and he was well built, strong and oiled. When he used to whip himself, his footwork expressed the pain and agony.
He never collected money from his own hands because it could ruin his performance or make people feel he is normal just like us, so his wife used to collect money.

I remember each year around Diwali i was afraid to go outside knowing that kode wala can come anytime and if he'll catch me he'll whip me with his long hunter as well. But now i miss that Kode wala. I have seen hundreds of kode wala but no one is better than him :)
Koda = hunter"
