Korea’s Fair Trade Commission to investigate Korean Air
  • 6 years ago
It began with a bottle of water. Earlier this month, then Korean Air executive Cho Hyun-min made the headlines for allegedly throwing water at an advertising company employee during a business meeting.
Now Korean Air's owning family is being forced into a corner as the police, the Korea Customs Service and the Korea Fair Trade Commission are all investigating the family.
Kan Hyeong-woo has more.
First it was the police. Then the Korea Customs Service.
And now Korea's Fair Trade Commission is taking action against Korean Air and its owners, the Cho family.
Korean Air is being investigated by the FTC on charges of related party transactions.
The FTC has sent six investigators to Korean Air's in-flight sales team... which is in charge of sales of duty free products during the flight. The investigators are looking into whether there were any illegal benefits provided for Korean Air's owners.
This follows the Korea Customs Service inspection of Korean Air's headquarters on Monday over alleged tax evasion.

Last week the police searched Korean Air's head office and confiscated two smartphones belonging to Cho Hyun-min, who is being investigated over an alleged assault related to the so-called 'bottle-rage' incident.
Cho is the sister of Cho Hyun-ah who in 2014 ordered a taxiing flight back to the gate in New York in the infamous 'nut-rage' incident.

Korean Air Chairman Cho Yang-ho apologized for the behavior of his daughters in a statement on Sunday, adding that they would be removed from management immediately.

But another family member is in hot-water after video footage of a woman presumed to be the wife of Cho Yang-ho has led to another preliminary investigation by local police against the Cho family. In the video, the woman believed to be Cho's wife and the director of the Ilwoo foundation, Lee Myung-hee appears to be kicking construction materials and physically abusing a worker.
