Report: Authorities Investigate After Suspects On Water Scooters Fire Shots At Cancun Beach Vendor
  • 6 years ago
According to an Associated Press report, authorities in Mexico are investigating a shooting in Cancun.

Cancun, Mexico, a popular tourist spot among locals and foreigners alike, recently experienced a bizarre gun-related incident.
According to the Associated Press, "Gunmen on water scooters shot at a roving vendor on a beach in Cancun's glittering hotel zone Thursday, an incident believed to be unprecedented for the Caribbean city."
The vendor is reported to have found cover inside a restaurant, and no injuries were reported. Authorities found four bullets but have not yet located the suspects.
Recent gang-related incidents in the area have raised some alarms.
A travel advisory, posted on March 16, by the US State Department urges "increased caution in Mexico due to crime."
Concerning the specific state, Quintana Roo, where Cancun is located, the department said, "According to Government of Mexico statistics, the state experienced an increase in homicide rates compared to the same period in 2016. While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted, criminal organization assassinations, turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by U.S. citizens."
However, these concerns don't seem to be impacting Mexico's tourism boom, at least for now.
"The number of tourists visiting Mexico soared reached 35 million visitors last year, up 9% from 2015," MarketWatch noted last month.
