Geneva on alert while authorities actively search for terrorism suspects
  • 8 years ago
GENEVA — Security officials in Geneva, Switzerland raised the alert level on Thursday, as police search for suspects with possible connections to terrorism.

According to Reuters, Swiss authorities are searching for four male suspects believed to be in or around Geneva. The United Nations European headquarters has been put on maximum alert, and U.N. guards were armed with MP-5 sub-machine guns on Thursday, which are not their usual weapons of choice.

A van with Belgian license plates carrying two suspects was spotted in Geneva on December 8, according to Les Temps. Late Wednesday night, the UN premises were evacuated for security purposes.

U.N. Geneva spokesman Rheal LeBlanc told Reuters: "The heightened security affects the entire Geneva area, and the U.N. is taking measures that are commensurate with those taken in the host country."

Diplomats from Russia and the United States are scheduled to meet in Geneva on Friday to hold talks on Syria, but the UN said the meeting would be held at a secret location.
