US-style politics comes to Indonesia

The Democrat party of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono may be unpopular and mired in corruption scandals but it is taking politics outside of the capital city, Jakarta, in a bid to drum up interest among voters. The party has just held the latest of a series of conventions in the coal-rich city of Balikpapan in Kalimantan, as it tries to find a successor to Mr Yudhoyono, who steps down as president this year after reaching the two-term limit. The FT's Ben Bland reports.
