Madrid’s Capitol building becomes Site of Cultural Interest

Madrid, Apr. 4 (EFE). (Camera: Ramón Ayala).- The Madrid regional government declared the Capitol building in the centre of Spanish capital a Site of Cultural Interest on Wednesday and classified it as a monument.
The Capitol is one of the most important and significant structures built in the 20th century in Madrid. It is situated in Madrid’s Gran Via, has become one of the city’s symbols and is  known for its cinema and large neon lights.
It is possibly Spain’s finest example of the expressionist facet of architectonic rationalism.
The building was constructed between 1931 and 1933 after its architects Luis Martínez Feduchi and Vicente Eced y Eced were inspired by German architect Erich Mendelsohn.
It was awarded with both the Madrid City Council prize in 1933 and the second class medal at the 1934 National Exhibition of Fine Arts.
It is a multifunctional building which now houses a hotel, businesses and one of the city’s most emblematic cinemas.
The building has been immortalized in paintings, graphic arts and films, as well as becoming a Madrid icon.
