No Miracle for Lindsey Vonn, but Mikaela Shiffrin Wins Silver in Combined
PYEONGCHANG, South Korea — In what will almost certainly be her last time in an Olympic start house, Lindsey Vonn pushed
out of the gate for her final run of the women’s Alpine combined late Thursday hoping, as she said, “for a miracle.”
Vonn led at the race’s halfway point by winning the downhill portion of the event.
But Gisin, a versatile skier — although one without any World Cup wins this year — combined a
third in the downhill with a fourth in the slalom, good enough for a win by nearly a second.
Shiffrin was asked about making up time against her rival, Lindsey Vonn, who was in first place.
Vonn’s Olympic journey would end with a “Did Not Finish.”
Shiffrin was sixth in the downhill, but only third in the slalom and won the silver medal, 0.97 seconds behind Gisin.
