Korean healthcare institutions expand businesses overseas

Korea's beauty care sector has become well-known around the world in recent years.
Now, Korean healthcare institutions involved in more sophisticated areas, like spinal and fertility treatments, are also ramping up their global presence.
Cho Sung-min has the story.

More South Korean medical institutions are expanding their businesses overseas.
According to the Korea Overseas Hospital Expansion Service, 155 domestic healthcare institutions opened branches outside Korea in 2016,... up nearly 10 percent from previous year.

In the past, most of the firms focused on China and the United States, but now, the range of countries has grown to include places like India and Vietnam.
Most of the medical firms that are going global are specialized in skincare treatment or plastic surgery,... but there's also been a rise in the number of institutions that specialize in more complex fields.

CHA Medical Group, for example, recently became majority shareholder of City Fertility Centre, a prominent Australian fertility treatment institution.
That acquisition means CHA Medical Group now manages and operates seven fertility centers across Australia.

"The level of technology was outstanding. It was incredible. So I think I am comfortable in saying that level of expertise in Korea is as good as anywhere in the world, if not better."

CHA Medical Group says it plans to use its treatment know-how and technology in other areas such as spinal treatment to expand its cooperation with partners and treat patients overseas,... which could ultimately lead to more foreigners visiting Korea to receive high-quality medical treatment.
