Report: Kelly Is Not In Favor Of Granting Kushner A Security Clearance Waiver

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly is reportedly not in favor of granting Jared Kushner a security clearance waiver.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly is not in favor of granting Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, a security clearance waiver, reports Politico. The media outlet notes that a person "familiar with" Kelly's "thinking" said he's also unlikely to resign if President Trump opts to do so anyway. As of Friday, Trump appeared reluctant to step into the situation, telling reporters, "General Kelly respects Jared a lot and General Kelly will make that call. I won't make that call. I will let the general…make that call."  The president also criticized the clearance system as being "broken" and noted, "Jared has done an outstanding job, I think he has been treated very unfairly. He works for nothing." Kushner oversees a number of efforts, including establishing peace in the Middle East, and has been working under a temporary clearance allowance to view sensitive government information. The Washington Post reports that Kelly announced last week that "staffers whose clearances have not been finalized will no longer be able to view top-secret information."
It remains unknown why Kushner has encountered troubles in the clearance process, but "sources familiar with the matter" told CNN the issue is likely to continue until special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation is complete.
