WTO upholds Japan's complaint over Seoul's ban on fisheries imports
  • 6 years ago
The World Trade Organization has upheld a Japanese complaint over South Korea's import ban on fish from Japan including Fukushima.
A WTO dispute panel said that while Seoul's claims were initially justified, keeping the ban violates the WTO's sanitary and phyto-sanitary agreement.
Seoul had placed import bans and additional testing requirements on Japanese fisheries in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.
Some countries maintain such bans,... but Korea is the only country that Japan has taken issue with,.. at the WTO.
It's the first ruling on the issue and either side can appeal within 60 days.
But some say the final ruling may be pushed back until next year due to unfilled positions at the appeals body and a backlog of cases.
