Sounds From The Corner Live #5 Atilia Haron

Expectations are the devil; I tried to authenticate Atilia Haron's appearance with few of her songs I found on the net. With a very protruding Jazz and soul influence in the songs, I never expected that what I witnessed that night is a beautiful lady with a bright smile, grey tutu skirt and (this is the twist) a Nine Inch Nails T-shirt. Very very cool.
Although Atilia's soothing voice is often resounds in stadium concerts and TV shows back in Malaysia, that night the graceful singer-songwriter chose Aksara Bookstore / Monka Magic in Kemang, which pretty much sizeable for an intimate and intense launching concert. I was still overwhelmed with the heart melting performance of the family values trio We love A.B.C. (before that, Leonardo and the Impeccable Six killed the stage with their impressive brass section) when Atilia kicked the first song.
Atilia's music is a handsome combination of well-polished chill Jazz with a handful of luring hooks. A kind of nuance that makes you either wanna kiss a girl, ask someone's number or even call your ex to tell that you miss him/her. Atilia sang in the most impressive simplicity, without any unnecessary vocal acrobat but still, holding on a firm character. Sumptuous yet modest.
Onstage, the daughter of "little dynamite" Salamiah Hassan which famed in the 70s pop scene in Malaysia told that Indonesian artists affected her big time in her career as a singer. Atilia mentioned couple of names such as Vina Panduwinata, Tompi, Maliq N D'essentials and SORE as her influence.
Thanks to her admiration to Indonesian musicians, Atilia was featured in "Silly Little Things", one of SORE's songs written in 2011. The night became more exciting when Ade Paloh -- SORE's vocalist -- came onstage and sang the song with Atilia. The set closed with "Harus Bagaimana", a piece from Maliq n D'Essentials' first album.
The launching concert of 'Indah' - Atilia's second album (released 2011 in Malaysia) - in Jakarta marked another novelty for her debut in South East Asia. The launching gig clearly wasn't her first attempt in Indonesia; before this she was invited to play in the globally recognized Java Jazz Festival and several gigs throughout the country.
