An elderly couple from Mumbai’s Charni Road, 88-year-old Narayan Lavate and his wife 78-year-old Iravati Lavate, has written to President demanding ‘Active Euthanasia’. The couple with no children and siblings feels that it’s unfair keeping them alive against their wishes. They added it is a “waste of the country's scarce resources as well as theirs.” Narayan Lavate retired from Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRCT) in 1989. The couple planned to go to Switzerland where ‘Active Euthanasia’ is allowed, but he cannot go there because he does not have a passport. He is waiting for the response from the President, if he does not get response he will advertise in the newspapers and offer Rs 5 Lakh to underworld don to take their lives.
