Welcome to Video Recall: a new series about the strange history of movies that were banned and/or recalled on DVD and VHS. Sex scandals, legal battles and creative feuds are just a few of the reasons why you’ll probably never see these rare releases of famous films. Let’s explore the darkest and most remote back alleys of home video history!

Today’s topic is the original DVD recall of Little Shop of Horrors (1986) from director Frank Oz (aka Grover) and producer David Geffen. The film stars Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Steve Martin, Jim Belushi, Bill Murray and many, may more comedy greats. The DVD was recalled due to a contested special feature: the inclusion of deleted scenes making up an alternate ending.

Let me know what you all think of this first episode of Video Recall and any ideas for future topics. I realize it’s a bit of a departure for me, but I’ve decided to shift gears to focus on my affinity for unpopular culture and independent filmmaking, starting with this videocassette-inspired series on strange movie history and rare DVDs and VHS.
