Queensland Rail Releases Footage of 'Drunken' Falls as it Urges Caution Over Festive Season

Queensland Rail said it would be deploying additional security staff around the festive season and on New Year’s Eve to ensure people travelling on the rail network remained safe.Queensland Rail made the announcement on December 19 as it released CCTV footage that it described as showing commuters “seemingly under the influence of alcohol” slipping, tripping and falling at Queensland train stations.In a press release, Queensland Rail Chief Executive Officer Nick Easy said more than 600 commuters slipped, tripped or fell on the rail network over the last financial year.Mr Easy said the first piece of footage was filmed at Fortitude Valley station in August 2017 and “shows a passenger attempting to fare evade by trying – and failing – to jump over the fare gates a number of times, before making a break for it down the up-escalators from one of the platforms.” Police met him on the platform and issued him with a $247 fine, he said.Mr Easy said the second piece of footage shows “a man, seemingly under the influence of alcohol, sprinting through Sandgate station with what appears to be a bag of alcoholic beverages in tow, before tripping not once, but twice along the stairwell.”Other footage shows a man falling onto the tracks at Fortitude Valley Station before being pulled up by people on the platform.“While Queensland Rail will be deploying additional security staff during the festive season, particularly around New Year’s Eve, ultimately your personal safety is your responsibility," Mr Easy said.
