Pope Urges Public to Embrace Migrants in Christmas Message Francis defended immigrants in a speech on Christmas Eve mass on Sunday. "They had to leave their people, their home and their land. This was no comfortable or easy journey for a young couple about to have a child." Pope Francis said at the St. Peter's Basilica He called public to open their hearts and homes to foreigners. More than 150,000 refugees crossed the Mediterranean in 2017 and at least 3,000 more drowned in the process, according to the United Nations.
