Clashes Between Rebel Alliance Leaves Smoke Billowing Over Sanaa

Smoke billowed over southern Sanna on Saturday, December 2, as Houthi militia and forces allied with former president Ali Abdullah Saleh fought for control of the city.Saturday marked the fourth day of fighting between Saleh’s forces and the Houthis, signalling a break in their alliance, which had controlled most of northern Yemen. Their coalition had isolated the internationally recognized government led by Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi in the southern city of Aden.In response to Houthi control, Saudi Arabia led an airstrike campaign and imposed a blockade on Yemen.UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for a ceasefire in Yemen and reiterated that the Saudi-led alliance should end their blockade. “Ambulances and medical teams cannot access the injured and people cannot go outside to buy food and other necessities. Aid workers are unable to travel and implement critical life-saving programmes at a time when millions of Yemenis rely on assistance to survive," he said.
