Tear Gas Fired at Protesters Demanding Release of Religious Leader Under House Arrest

Tear gas canisters aimed at supporters of a Shia religious leader, who is under house arrest and needs medical treatment, fell on a street in Sitra, Bahrain on November 30.Shia Muslim cleric Ayatollah Isa Qassim has been under virtual house arrest since the Bahraini monarchy revoked his citizenship in June 2016. In May 2017, Qassim was given a one-year suspended sentence on charges of corruption, again prompting protests that police used deadly violence to disperse.Qassim’s health is deteriorating, and doctors who examined him recommended emergency surgery, Reuters said.In other footage of the protests on November 30, a sign read “Defense until death of our leader Qassim.” Also, a man can be heard addressing the King of Bahrain saying, “We are people who will not abandon our leader.” Credit: Twitter/LuaLuaTV via Storyful
