North Korea is reportedly on the verge of creating a nuclear intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM, able to reach the mainland of the United States.
Cho Myoung-gyon, South Korea's unification minister, recently told one of his nation's news agencies that the North "has been developing its nuclear weapons at a faster-than-expected pace. We cannot rule out the possibility that North Korea could announce its completion of a clear force within one year,"
Though the last test involving detonation was conducted in September, the minister says trials involving engines and fuels have been going on over the past weeks.
"We have seen some noteworthy activities recently, but we need more monitoring before being able to tell whether they would lead to an actual missile test or provocation," he further noted.
That said, he does believe diplomacy remains a viable option at this time, and North Korea's apparent slowdown in missile detonations could create opportunities for the U.S. and other nations to enter disarmament negotiations with the country.
President Trump has said he does not believe talks are the best option, as none have proven particularly fruitful, according to USA Today.
