In the Ruins of Deir Ezzor: Syrian Forces Push Islamic State Out, Devastation Left Behind

The Syrian Army said this week it had driven the last of Islamic State from the last bastion of its failed caliphate in Deir Ezzor, but as this November 4 video shows, much of what is left behind in the city is wreckage, weapons and rubble. The video is described as showing Hassan al-Taha Street and Al-Bassel Square, towards the “old market,” documenting the Syrian Army and its allies’ control of Sheikh Yassin, al-Hamidiya and Tkaya districts and neighborhoods, and the municipal stadium. An Islamic State headquarters building can be seen at 00:19, characterized by the black paint and familiar logo, following shots of mortars and shells left behind.
