Are You Ready To Eat Fruit Fly Larvae?

Are you hungry enough to eat this?

Flying Spark, an Israel-based startup, says flies could help feed the world, and is turning fruit fly larvae into edible powder. Extremely high in protein, larvae provide calcium and magnesium. They're also cheap to farm because of their super-short lifespan.

The supplement can be spread on bread, pasta, and even meatballs to create the powder. With larvae being grounded up, the fat is removed before unused material is turned into oil. That oil can be used as dietary supplements or as part of cosmetics.

The company hopes the powder may one day go beyond a supplement, to become a substitute for meat, poultry, or fish.

Bug appétit!
