Merkel wins fourth term, while far-right AfD surges
  • 7 years ago
German Chancellor Angela Merkel won her fourth general election on Sunday. However, her victory was overshadowed by the success of the far-right AfD party, which entered the parliament for the first time since World War II. Merkel won 33 percent of the vote, the lowest result so far achieved by the leader of the christian democratic party. After her victory, Merkel admitted that she had hoped for a better result, and pledged to "reconquer" AfD voters.
