‘No cherry picking!’ Smug Verhofstadt claims May admitted DEFEAT at Florence Brexit speech
GUY VERHOFSTADT has issued a smug rebuttal to Theresa May’s Brexit speech today, claiming the PM admitted defeat in Florence. “Finally, the UK Government concedes a transition period will be necessary … it will be impossible to cherry-pick.”He said he would continue to focus on the rights of EU citizens in Britain, a red line issue for Brussels in the quickly-stagnating Brexit talks. Mr Verhofstadt said: “The protection of the rights of our EU citizens living in Britain must be absolute and beyond any doubt.READ MORE: Who are the EU's Brexit negotiators?
“I repeat that the new ‘settled status’, as proposed by the UK Government, is hugely problematic in that respect as it will create an enormous administrative burden and uncertainty for millions of our citizens.”And he demanded more clarity on the subjects of a EU divorce bill and the future of the Irish border. He wrote: “On the financial settlement, Prime Minister May brought some additional clarifications but also here important questions remain.READ MORE: What happens if Britain quits Brexit talks with no deal? “The UK government will have to come up with concrete proposals next week, during the fourth round of negotiations to bring full clarity.“The EU always made clear that the Irish question is one of our priorities.
