岩村城跡1185年（鎌倉時代）に築城されたお城でしたが、今ではその面影として残っているのは、六段壁といわれる石積みが有名です。また、女城主としても有名ですが、織田信長の伯母であるお直(つや)の方が夫亡きあと、武田方の秋山信友と城を守るために秋山信友と結婚しましたが、信長により処刑されたという悲しいお話も残ります。又、 4百余年の歴史を持つ城下町。現在の本町通りの町並みは江戸時代から続くものです。上町には職人が、中町や下町には商い屋が並んでいたそうです。まるで
江戸時代にタイムスリップしたような町並みです。岩村が生んだ著名人として、佐藤一斎がいます安永元（1772）年10月20日岩村藩の家老佐藤信由（のぶより）の二男として、江戸浜町の下屋敷（現東京都中央区日本橋浜町）で生まれました。34歳で朱子学の宗家林家（りんけ）の塾長となり、大学頭（だいがくのかみ）林述斎（じゅっさい）（岩村藩主松平乗蘊（のりもり）の三男）とコンビを組み、多くの門下生の指導に当たりました。門下生には、佐久間象山、山田方谷、渡辺崋山などがいます。一斎の教えが、幕末から明治維新にかけ新しい日本をつくって行った指導者たちに多大な影響を与えたと言われています。
