President Trump tweeted support for the latest Republican effort to end Obamacare while taking a moment to slam bill detractor Republican Senator Rand Paul.
“Rand Paul is a friend of mine but he is such a negative force when it comes to fixing healthcare. Graham-Cassidy Bill is GREAT! Ends Ocare," Trump said on Wednesday. "I hope Republican Senators will vote for Graham-Cassidy and fulfill their promise to Repeal & Replace ObamaCare. Money direct to States!”
Paul has stated that he opposes the bill because it doesn’t go far enough.
“This isn't a repeal. This is keeping Obamacare and redistributing the proceeds," the senator said in a Tuesday appearance on Fox News. "So, this is not a repeal bill, this is sort of, 'Hey, we'll take Obamacare, replace it with Obamacare, but we're going to let the states have a little more power in how we spend it.'"
While Paul sees it more as a continuation of what currently exists, a number of health care groups and governors regard it as a potentially damaging plan that could impact coverage for many.
“The current bill would give states control over billions in federal health-care spending and enact deep cuts to Medicaid," according to the Washington Post. "The Medicaid cuts in particular are a major source of concern to the governors, both in terms of imposing a per capita limit on what states would receive and putting restrictions on how they could spend any federal aid on their expanded Medicaid populations.”
