About a month and a half after a man opened fire on Republicans practicing for a baseball game, the U.S. Capitol Police is said to be investigating an error involving its response to the incident that day.
Bloomberg is reporting, based on inside sources, that the department’s tactical team, including officers in the Capitol Police Containment and Emergency Response Team units, had initially been directed to the D.C. residence of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi--not the Virginia baseball field where the shooting occurred.
The report points out that the team did ultimately arrive at the field, but “it’s unclear how much time the unit lost because of the mix-up. It also wasn’t clear whether the squad arrived at Pelosi’s house or was redirected en route.”
The delay is not believed to have made a material difference in the outcome, though a Capitol Police spokesperson declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.
During a ceremony on July 27 honoring the first responders, President Trump described the scene.
"Capitol Police Special Agents David Bailey and Crystal Griner raced through the bullets -- and that's exactly what they did, they raced through the bullets -- and immediately engaged the gunman," Trump said. "Minutes later, members of the Alexandria Police Department arrived on scene. Officers Nicole Battaglia, Kevin Jobe, and Alex Jensen joined the fight."
According to CBS News, "The rifle shots wounded five individuals, including both Griner and Bailey as well as House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana."
The gunman, identified as James Hodgkinson of Illinois, was shot and killed during the shootout.
