NBC's 'Celebrity Apprentice' runner-up Clay Aiken has revealed that host Donald Trump wasn’t as in charge in the boardroom as he appeared to be.
During a recent interview on Domecast, a podcast about North Carolina politics, Aiken said, “Trump didn’t decide who got fired on ‘Apprentice,’ I mean, NBC made those decisions.”
The former 'American Idol' star explained, “We’d be sitting in the boardroom...There used to be a little thing right on his desk that looked like a phone--he pretended it was a phone--but it was actually a teleprompter where the producers were sending him notes...and he’d say, ‘Oh, well you two didn’t get along.’ Well, he didn’t know that.”
He continued, “And I think to myself, the man as president definitely has a teleprompter sitting on his desk right now with people telling him, ‘Oh well such and such is in the healthcare bill…’ I feel like half the time his teleprompter has broken down as president and he doesn't know what's going on.”
His comment was in response to a question about similarities between Trump on the show and the president he sees in office.
Despite the criticisms, Aiken did say, “I always liked him….he is a very gracious person in person...He’s a nice guy, and I always liked him.”
The singer echoed a similar warm sentiment two years ago, also jokingly calling Trump “that uncle, who embarrasses the hell out of you sometimes and you still love them, but damn, you wish they'd shut up,” notes CNN.
However, last year, Aiken blasted the Republican over the violence at his campaign rallies, saying, “You can’t tell me that you are going to be the person who’s toughest with Vladimir Putin if you don’t even have the balls to tell your people not to hit folks.”
