Eating sugar while pregnant may cause allergies in children

A new study published by the European Respiratory Journal suggests that the amount of sugar eaten during pregnancy could impact her child's risk of having allergies. 9,000 women who were pregnant in the 1990s were studied and asked about their weekly sugar intake. Their children were then tested seven years later. The study found that children whose mom's had high sugar diets were 38 percent more likely to have an allergy and 73 percent more likely to be allergic to multiple things. “The dramatic ‘epidemic’ of asthma and allergies in the West in the last 50 years is still largely unexplained. One potential culprit is a change in diet.” Despite the large testing pool, the study was unable to determine a concrete cause-and-effect relationship and requires more study.
