Fire Ants Cling Together to Form Raft in Cindy Floodwaters

This video from Mandeville, Louisiana, on June 21 shows a colony of fire ants clumping together to create a living raft in the floodwaters caused by a rise in the levels of Lake Pontchartrain as Tropical Storm Cindy drew closer. When faced with an influx of water to their colony, fire ants will gather together to protect the most vulnerable in their ranks and create a living raft until they find dry land. According to biologists, the ants cannot drown in water and will swarm any solid object they find in the water, including paddles, arms and shoes. Credit: Facebook/Donald Harb via Storyful
